How to Play

Protagonists and Referees

To play S&S, you need a referee and two to six other players to portray the protagonists.

Players

Players inhabit the role of the story’s protagonists. To be a player, you create a protagonist that forms a team with the protagonists created by other players.

Referees

One player takes on the special role of referee. A referee is responsible for all the non-protagonist characters in the game’s world, designing and facilitating scenarios, and adjudicating the rules.

Core Gameplay Loop

In S&S, scenarios typically unfold in the following stages:

  1. The referee describes the scenario, including the environment and the actions of non-protagonist characters.
  2. The players declare what their protagonists do.
  3. The referee determines the results of the protagonists’ actions.
